Sinusitis Another highly common infection that causes bad breath is sinusitis. People affected by this condition will tend to notice that their mucus usually have a really bad odor of its own. Let us understand how this comes about.

Sometimes, even the best oral hygiene in the world cannot help you from getting rid of bad breath. This usually happens when the condition that causes it is not directly related to the state of your oral care. One such cause is due to infections. In this group, there are many types of infection that cause your breath to smell. It is very important to understand that in such a situation, the only way to get rid of bad breath is to treat the infection. This might involve antibiotics and it is crucial that you consult a doctor before taking up any medication yourself.

Children can also develop strep throat and, as a result, may suffer from headaches, body aches, nausea, stomachaches and vomiting. It is easy to differentiate from colds as strep throat does not come with the associated symptoms of runny nose, coughing or sneezing.

When talking about sinusitis and bad breath, we are dealing with two agents that cause foul odors: mucus and anaerobic bacteria. This is why the bad breath exhibited by patients is one of the strongest of all bad breath cases caused by various infections.

In rare cases, sinus headaches can also be caused by allergic reactions of various kinds. Certain things in food or in the air could trigger a reaction in those not normally affected by sinus headaches. These causes usually affect only a small portion of the population.

Q: I went to the Doctor because I was hoarse. With the sinus drainage and him thinking that it could be stomach acid, I did try things like Nexium and Nasonex spray, without any luck. In reading some of your website I thought that I read something about a sinus and spleen connection. I think it was something about wet or dry spleen that herbs could help. If you don't have a spleen, it seems that you would be prone to constant sinus problems, which I think I have. It seems like I always have some mucous at the back of my throat. Any ideas? I would appreciate any info you can offer. I will try to locate a Chinese medicine practitioner. Thanks, - Patrick

Closing Thoughts Although all of these infections are well known to cause bad breath, it is important to understand that other infections can also have the same effect on our body. These examples include lung infections and mouth infection. Sometimes they are even linked to each other. For instance, if you are suffering from sinusitis and you are exhibiting dry mouth and throat, this could lead to mucus reaching the lungs because the road to the stomach is not moist enough to guide it properly. We will thus get a complication of sinusitis that will manifest itself as an infection of the lungs.

Causes of Sinus Congestion There is a connection with the sinuses: In CM, Spleen deficiency leads to dampness and phlegm (this is probably the "wet spleen" you were trying to remember), which can show up in sinus congestion. The Spleen is said to "raise the clear yang and descend the turbid yin." But there are other causes and factors in sinus congestion: inflammation (heat), stress, qi stagnation, and Liver/Gallbladder damp-heat.

There are good herbs for this- e.g. the formula Ophiopogonis Plus (O+)from Far East Summit. But again, the complexity of the whole condition may make just one formula problematic - this one increase Lung yin, and if you also have sinus congestion, it might even worsen that. So, you'd need some combination like CEZT and O+.

Below are some examples of such infections that might affect your breath conditions. Strep Throat Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the tissues located in the back area of your throat (also known as pharynx) and the adenoids or tonsils. It is a common disease and it is very common cause of bad breath.

Sometimes a more serious condition is indicated by a sinus headache. A deviated septum is genetic problem and the cavities tend to keep more moisture and fluids than it should. This is one type of sinusitis. If diagnosed with this condition, it can be corrected through surgical methods.

Antibiotic Side Effects - When They're Wrong If the sinusitis hasn't responded to antibiotics, then either the wrong ones were prescribed, or you need to try another kind of treatment. Chinese Herbal Medicine can address the full spectrum of complaints and causes; we often treat the conditions which are not responding to conventional treatments like antibiotics. A woman wrote me about how antibiotics weren't solving her diarrhea problem- this can happen when the disease is cold in nature. Antibiotics are cold and bitter; these qualities help it fight the dampness and heat of bacterial infections. But they are more of the same damage when the disease is cold or deficient in nature. Acupuncture and moxibustion (the warming of acupuncture points) can also be effective; some people respond very quickly... results vary depending upon a number of factors (the acupuncturist's education, accuracy of diagnosis, frequency of treatment, and patient compliance with diet and lifestyle suggestions).

Brian Carter has been making herbs and acupuncture fun and easy to understand since 1999 when he founded the Pulse of Oriental Medicine. For more about sinuses, Sinus Infection Symptoms and Information.

When the sinus cavities are full and cause a problem, it will resolve itself when the cavities are drained. It is useful to try inhaling steam as a start to reduce the level of fluids. Antibiotics are needed to lessen the amount of fluid in the sinuses. If you have recurring sinus headaches, sit down with your doctor to determine the best treatment options.

Treating the symptoms of sinus headaches may be enough to get you through the milder cases. Place a hot or cold towel or a compress to help with the pain and swelling. You can also purchase nasal sprays to treat the problem and it can be quite effective. Do not go above the prescribed limit as you could aggravate the condition.

Be careful that you do not select one that will actually worsen the affects. Acetaminophen or aspirins are useful treatments, but it is easy to use too much of it. MOH (medication overuse headache) is something that affects people that overuse their medications, whether it be over-the-counter or prescription.

Sinus Infection Causes Sinus problems can be caused by many things- you have to think about environmental and food allergies (allergic sinusitis), chronic sinus infection, and chronic colds. Without more information, it's hard to be specific. Sinusitis often develops after colds, and can become a chronic problem. The sinuses are very small... one of our weak points, especially for people with weakened immune systems or in the presence of irritants (once again, pollution, allergens, etc.)... she probably asked about the farms and pesticides while she was thinking about the cause of your chronic sinusitis.

But you can't take them all! And, taking the wrong ones could make you worse. So, get thee to an herbalist - that is, an acupuncturist who knows their herbs. We have an acupuncturist-finding resource which also has some tips for evaluating several acupuncturists before deciding which one to see.

Treat the Causes and the Symptoms To treat it well, you need not only a sinus draining formula like Cang Er Zi Tang (CEZT) as the basis, but also herbs that address the root and related patterns. Only taking CEZT would not fix the cause of the problem, so by itself it would be only a temporary fix. We would add all or parts of formulas like:

Nasal Polyps Nasal Polyps are a mass of swollen tissue that is mucus covered, which grows out of the sinuses into the nasal passages. More than one nasal polyp can appear and they will block the passage, making it very difficult to breathe and smell. It will cause the person suffering from it to only use the mouth for breathing, which will eventually dry the mouth.

Serious Causes of Sinusitis, and Serious Solutions For those with chronic sinusitis, tests need to be done to rule out the serious things. Sinusitis can be just a simple end-of-your-cold complication, but it can also show up as part of: nasal tumors, fungal infections, and HIV or other immunodeficiency. What about the sinusitis surgery? It works from 50-93% of the time... so it can be a great help if you're sick and tired of it, and nothing else has worked. but it's also a super-painful process! I would see an herbalist first.

In fact, the autumn season (when this question was asked and article was written), is associated with both the Lung and with dryness. So this would be the time of the year that the most people would get hoarse.

Environmental factors can also contribute to sinus headaches. Taking a plane actually aggravates them as the pressure change affects it. Allergens and stress can also adversely affect the sinuses. Other causes such as the weather can affect the problem. With humidity levels or air pressure rising or dropping, it can make sinus cavities get inflamed and headaches tend to follow.

Once you have found out the root of the problem, there are many ways to treat it. Unfortunately, when they are caused by the common cold, only time can heal the condition. There are, however, various pain relief medicines available.

Q: I had my spleen removed because of Hodgkins Disease. What should I use for stuffy sinus and constant hoarseness? - Patrick A: In my opinion, you shouldn't "use" anything, but go see a Chinese medicine (CM) practitioner (acupuncturist/herbalist) for the appropriate herbs for your condition, which I cannot diagnose over the internet. I wonder if you are hoarse because of over the counter decongestants? - B

Many people often overlook the impacts that sinus has on their body. Often, some doctors might not give a correct diagnosis when sinus could be the main cause for a blinding headache. This usually happens when the sinus are inflamed.

Sinus Infection Symptoms The classic acute sinusitis symptoms are nasal congestion, green nasal phlegm, facial/dental pain, eye pain, headache, and a cough at night. Some patients also complain of fever, feeling ill, bad breath and a sore throat. Chronic sinusitis is more difficult to diagnose. You can have the same symptoms above in a milder form. Chronic means long-term; it's not usually thought of as chronic unless it's been going on for 2 months or more.

Mucus is made out of interlinked layers of protein. When mucus covers the back areas of the throat and tongue, it will create an environment that is oxygen free. This condition is known as post nasal drip and it is a direct cause of bad breath in people suffering from sinusitis. Anaerobic bacteria can feed on it and often that post nasal drip can cover large areas of the mouth allowing bacteria to easily multiply and produce waste products. These result in the foul smell we are familiar with. Patients suffering from sinusitis can also experience a constant need to swallowing because of mucus gathering at the back of the throat.

The Spleen in Western and Chinese Medicine Well, first please note that the Spleen of CM is different than the anatomical spleen of western medicine. The western spleen organ is mostly involved with blood, whereas the Chinese medicine Spleen organ-system is about digestion, assimilation, getting energy to the four limbs. In western terms, Spleen qi is probably something like enzymes (though not limited to that), which work with the stomach acid (part of the Stomach qi or yang) to digest the food.

A simple kitchen remedy for Lung dryness would be to drink some

These headaches are called secondary headaches when they are caused by something like a common cold or some other existing medical condition. If the headache is the medical issue itself, it is called a primary headache. These too are often caused by something else.

This is why, in Chinese Medicine, we always balance an herb with other herbs- if we are drying the phlegm, we also moisten at the same time. Moisture helps the sinuses drain- you remember that Crocodile-Dundee-put-your-head-under-the-steaming-pot-thing? Likewise, there are chinese herbs whose function it is to moisten and transform phlegm.

Liu Jun Zi Tang for Spleen deficient dampness Er Chen Tang for phlegm Long Dan Xie Gan Tang for Liver Gallbladder damp-heat Shu Kan Wan or Xiao Yao San for Liver qi stagnation. Huang Lian Wen Dan Tang for phlegm and Stomach heat

Cold and Deficient If the mucus is clear or white, then it is more likely cold in nature. That fits with a Spleen-system deficiency and dampness. That would fit with the pulse she felt. You would have lowered appetite, feel fatigued, have loose stool, and possibly feel cold easily. Antibiotics wouldn't help here, and could even make things worse.

Sinuses are located in a few different places. It will encompass the area above the nose and behind the eyes. The mucus and tissue in these cavities can become full or irritated, causing much pain. There are occasions when the cavities are filled to the brim and intense pressure is created, causing pain.

Antibiotic Overuse Problems I hate to say it (because antibiotics are so great in some situations, and so popular overall), but antibiotics can complicate things even further - there are conditions that do not respond to them... and there are many situations in which they are not even indicated.

The best way to handle any type of infection, both internal and external, is to consult a doctor. There are different tests that need to be performed in order to understand which treatment solution will work best. Also, there is the possibility of developing various complications that can lead to even more problems such as having to undergo surgery. Hence, it is always advisable to consult your doctor when in doubt.

Physicians have over-prescribed antibiotics for years... they know it, there have been studies that show it, and as a profession they've moved away from that. But people still want to leave the doctor's office with a prescription, a magic-bullet. Of course, sometimes the issue is which antibiotic is the most appropriate one. They don't all work for everything.

Hoarseness and the Lung-system In Chinese medicine, we generally attribute hoarseness and loss of voice to dryness. The Lung-system, which includes the throat, is said to "hate dryness." The Lung likes to be moist - so the Lung yin is very important, and dryness is the enemy.

Decongestant Side Effects Decongestants are often prescribed. They work by drying you out. Unfortunately, they don't just dry the mucus. Long-term use of decongestants can lead to other problems, like the dry or heat types of sinus inflammation.

This condition usually appears in individuals who suffer from respiratory allergies or chronic sinus infections. Nasal sprays that contain corticosteroids are used to treat small polyps and if they do not respond to such a treatment option, surgery is needed in order to remove them. The problem is that in most cases nasal polyps do return even after being properly treated. We can thus experience a constant struggle with the condition and bad breath would be the least of our worries in this situation.

Mold, Fungus, and Sick Buildings And we can't forget about mold! While some people appear to be more sensitive than others, fungus can cause fungal sinusitis. This gets into the whole 'sick-building' topic... Mold can grow in the walls of houses and offices, and is not always easy to detect.

In most cases strep throat will go away on its own in a few days but may also require antibiotics in order to eliminate the threat of possible complications like rheumatic fever. To eliminate this risk, be sure to consult a specialist as soon as symptoms appear.

Foul mouth odors are actually a symptom of the infection. The tissues mentioned above will get inflamed and irritated and this will cause severe sore throat. The most common symptoms are a fever that is higher than 101 degrees Fahrenheit, difficulty and pain in swallowing, different areas of the throat and tonsils presenting yellow or white spots and swollen lymph nodes present inside the neck.
